Solar capacity jumps over 5,300% since 2014, climate targets achieved ahead of time.
India Becomes World’s Second-Largest Solar Market in 2025: Bhupender Yadav.
India has emerged as the world’s second-largest solar market in 2025, surpassing the United States in annual solar capacity additions, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced. Highlighting the country’s rapid clean energy transition, Yadav said the achievement reflects India’s commitment to building reliable, efficient and sustainable solar infrastructure. India’s installed solar capacity has risen dramatically from just 2.8 GW in 2014 to over 155 GW today—an increase of more than 5,370%. This surge has enabled the country to cross 50% non-fossil fuel capacity in its total installed power mix and meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement well ahead of schedule. The minister also noted the impact of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, under which more than 40 lakh households are now powered by solar energy. The milestone reinforces India’s position as a global leader in renewable energy and climate action.
