Outré House in New Delhi Reimagines Urban Living Through Craft, Curves and Nature

New Delhi: Located in Anand Niketan, Outré House by Anagram Architects explores an alternative approach to contemporary urban residential architecture, bringing together handcrafted construction, curvilinear forms and natural elements.

Large urban residences often serve not only the functional requirements of their inhabitants but also reflect familial, financial and aspirational values. As a result, luxury homes frequently become spaces of private indulgence as well as expressions of architectural identity.

With globalised construction, fabrication and procurement increasingly influencing architecture, contemporary homes often rely on industrially manufactured materials, pre-engineered systems and standardised geometries.

Outré House takes a different approach, seeking distinctive architectural expression through humble materials worked by hand and crafted directly on site.

Reconnecting Material with Making

At the heart of Outré House is an attempt to restore the relationship between material and craftsmanship.

Instead of treating handcrafted details merely as decorative additions, the residence incorporates them throughout its architectural language.

From bespoke concrete formwork and poured flooring to curved joinery and rhythmically notched masonry, handcrafted construction becomes an integral part of the overall design.

The approach moves beyond the dominance of straight lines, allowing crafted elements and details to flow across different surfaces and spaces.

Curvilinear Architecture Creates Fluid Spaces

Urban residential architecture is often shaped by city grids, planning regulations and volumetric controls, resulting in rectilinear building forms.

Such box-like configurations can create compartmentalised interiors and repetitive floor layouts.

Outré House responds by introducing curvilinear forms that generate more fluid spatial relationships within the residence.

The curves help spaces transition more naturally from one area to another, supporting social interaction and creating interconnected environments for the resident family.

Craftsmanship Meets Nature

Another defining characteristic of Outré House is the relationship between handcrafted architecture and greenery.

Precisely turned wooden louvres are combined with vertically installed planters, allowing vegetation to become closely integrated with architectural and structural elements.

This interaction between crafted surfaces and foliage extends into internal gardens and rooftop green spaces, positioning nature as an active part of the residential experience.

Rather than separating landscape from architecture, the design allows the two to visually and spatially overlap.

Bespoke Details Add a Distinctive Identity

The combination of craft and nature is further expressed through a bespoke floral chandelier designed by Mann Singh for the lounge.

Such individual elements reinforce the project's emphasis on handcrafted design and provide a contrast to standardised, industrially produced residential interiors.

Through its use of curves, tactile materials, custom-made details and integrated greenery, Outré House explores how an urban residence can establish a distinctive identity while remaining responsive to the social needs of its occupants.
