SAGA Space Architects Reveals EcoNeo, a Low-Carbon Summer House

SAGA Space Architects has revealed EcoNeo, a 35 m² digitally fabricated summer house in Zealand, Denmark, that brings space-habitat design principles back to Earth. The project explores how compact planning, resource efficiency, smart-home technology, biogenic materials, and energy-efficient systems can create a more sustainable approach to holiday living.

Designed around the same principles used when creating architecture for extreme environments, EcoNeo focuses on compact living, efficient use of resources, and human well-being. The project presents a new model for sustainable summer houses: smaller, smarter, more efficient, and lower in environmental impact without compromising comfort or atmosphere.

Compact Design for Comfortable Living

EcoNeo demonstrates how a small footprint can still provide a generous living experience. The 35 m² summer house features a central living room with a table that can accommodate up to 10 people, creating a social space for family and friends.

A spacious sauna provides room for up to eight people and can also be transformed to provide two additional sleeping spaces. Two mezzanines serve as the primary sleeping areas for four people, while the central staircase incorporates integrated storage to make efficient use of every available square metre.

A skylight brings natural daylight deep into the compact interior, helping the space feel brighter, more open, and more spacious. Outside, a terrace extends the living area into the surrounding landscape, while a cold plunge complements the sauna and reflects traditional Scandinavian summerhouse living.

Smart-Home Technology and Environmental Control

EcoNeo is designed to operate as a smart summer house, helping maintain comfort and energy efficiency throughout the year, including during Denmark's dark winter months.

Circadian lighting follows a 24-hour daylight rhythm, while SAGA's Ravens Environmental Sensing System monitors air quality and movement, applying technology originally developed for the studio's space habitats.

Through the ODIN operating system and a central touchscreen, EcoNeo can respond to environmental conditions. The system can automatically adjust lighting, open windows or blinds, and control the sauna based on the home's environmental data and programmed settings.

Biogenic Materials and Digital Fabrication

The project combines what SAGA describes as Terra Tech: biogenic natural materials, advanced technology, digital fabrication, and low-impact construction methods.

EcoNeo uses oak, birch, Douglas fir, plywood, OSB panels, and wood-fibre insulation. These materials help reduce the project's carbon impact while creating a warm, tactile, and natural interior environment.

The summer house is constructed using CNC-cut modular panels, enabling efficient on-site assembly and a more precise construction process. Digital fabrication also helps reduce material waste and supports a more efficient building methodology.

Energy Efficiency and Low-Carbon Performance

Operational energy demand is reduced through a combination of high-performance insulation, automated blinds, motorized windows for natural ventilation, presence detection, and time-based schedules.

A highly efficient heat pump can deliver up to 4.6 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed under rated conditions. Lighting and appliances are supported by nearby solar cells and a medium-sized battery bank, further reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.

According to the project information, around 20% of a typical house's greenhouse gas emissions are associated with construction, while approximately 80% can come from operation over its lifetime. EcoNeo therefore places strong emphasis on reducing operational energy consumption as well as minimizing the environmental impact of construction.

A New Approach to Sustainable Summer Houses

“With EcoNeo, our goal was to show that sustainable tiny living does not have to mean compromise. In space, every square metre has to support human well-being. We brought that thinking back to Earth to show that a 35 m² summerhouse can still feel generous, social, and deeply connected to nature,” said Sebastian Aristotelis, Co-Founder and Lead Architect at SAGA Space Architects.

By combining compact spatial planning, digital fabrication, biogenic materials, renewable energy support, and smart-home systems, EcoNeo demonstrates how future housing can become smaller without reducing the quality of the living experience.

The project acts as a prototype for a more sustainable approach to holiday homes and showcases the potential for these design principles to be scaled and adapted to other housing concepts.

EcoNeo Compared with the Average Danish Summer House

The average size of a newly built summer house in Denmark is approximately 93.6 m², with an average emission of around 9.5 kg CO₂ per m² per year.

At only 35 m², EcoNeo is approximately 60% smaller than the average newly built Danish summer house based on floor area alone. Combined with its biogenic materials, efficient systems, smart environmental controls, and renewable energy support, EcoNeo has an estimated footprint of approximately 175 kg CO₂ per year.

By comparison, the estimated annual footprint of an average newly built Danish summer house is approximately 883.5 kg CO₂ per year. This represents an estimated 80% reduction in annual carbon footprint.

EcoNeo demonstrates how space-habitat thinking, compact architecture, sustainable materials, digital fabrication, and intelligent building systems can come together to create a comfortable and environmentally conscious summer house for the future.
