GST Council Approves Two-Tier Tax Regime from Sept 22. The GST Council has cleared a landmark reform, slashing tax rates and simplifying slabs to boost consumption and ease compliance. Effective September 22, GST will be streamlined into two primary rates—5% and 18%—with a special 40% slab for select luxury items like big cars, yachts, and private aircraft. Essential items such as shampoo, hair oil, toothpaste, bicycles, kitchenware, and cereals will now attract just 5% GST, while life and health insurance policies have been moved to the nil-tax category. Cement, small cars, TVs, air-conditioners, and motorcycles under 350cc will now fall under the 18% slab, down from 28%. The reform is expected to reduce household expenses, boost spending, and offset the economic impact of rising US tariffs. Economists project a 0.5% GDP growth boost in two years. For consumers, this festive season promises lighter bills and broader savings.
