Kerala Sanctions ₹1.83 Crore DPR to Build Industrial Ecosystem Around Vizhinjam Port.

The Kerala government has cleared ₹1.83 crore for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to transform Vizhinjam International Seaport into a major industrial hub. A consultant, to be finalised this month, will map container yards, logistics clusters, and marine access, with a year’s deadline for completion. The move comes amid urgent challenges of land scarcity, inflated prices, and inadequate allied infrastructure. Currently, the port lacks container yards, freight zones, and trucking terminals, making gateway cargo operations unfeasible. To address this, the Kerala Maritime Board has proposed transferring five acres near Harbour Road for logistics facilities under a PPP model, while Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd will earmark 200 acres for sector-specific clusters like food processing and manufacturing. Connectivity works are progressing, with a temporary NH-66 link set to open soon, though the ₹2,360 crore cloverleaf interchange project remains stalled. Plans for a 9km railway tunnel to Balaramapuram are also underway.
