China is reportedly constructing what could become the world’s largest naval replenishment ship, marking a significant step in expanding the operational reach of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Satellite imagery suggests the vessel, under construction at Guangzhou Shipyard International, is around 270 metres long—larger than China’s existing Type 901 support ships and potentially bigger than the U.S. Navy’s Supply-class logistics vessels. Designed to refuel and resupply warships at sea, the ship will enable aircraft carriers, destroyers, and other naval assets to remain deployed for extended periods without returning to port. Analysts believe the project reflects China’s growing focus on blue-water naval operations and long-range military presence. The expansion of advanced logistics capabilities is expected to strengthen the PLAN’s carrier strike groups and improve its ability to operate across distant maritime regions, reinforcing Beijing’s ambitions to emerge as a leading global naval power.
