Digital land mapping to bring clarity, transparency, and certainty to property transactions.

GIS Maps to Transform Property Registration Across India

India is preparing to modernise its property registration system by integrating Geographic Information System (GIS) maps with sale deeds nationwide. This reform will replace the traditional method of describing property boundaries using directions and landmarks with precise digital mapping linked to spatial databases. The initiative aims to ensure that every property transaction is digitally connected to an accurately mapped land parcel, reducing disputes and ambiguities over boundaries. The Centre is working closely with state governments, including Maharashtra, to develop the required technology, legal provisions, and GIS-enabled registration platforms. The nationwide rollout is expected to be completed within the next two years. Initially, high-resolution satellite imagery with up to 30 cm accuracy will support the system until fresh ground-level surveys are completed. Officials emphasise that land and property transactions form a significant part of India’s economy, making accurate documentation essential. Once implemented, GIS-linked sale deeds are expected to enhance transparency, improve citizen confidence, and make property transactions more secure and efficient.
