Rooftop Solar, KUSUM Drive 40% of India’s Solar Additions in FY27.

Decentralised solar emerges as a key growth engine as utility-scale projects face transmission constraints. 

Rooftop solar and the PM-KUSUM scheme accounted for around 40% of India’s solar capacity additions during FY27 through July, according to a Bernstein report. The rising contribution highlights the growing importance of decentralised renewable energy in India’s clean-energy expansion. The trend marks a significant increase from FY26, when rooftop and KUSUM projects contributed 22% of the country’s solar capacity additions. India added a record 45 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind capacity during FY26, with annual solar additions rising sharply from 24 GW in FY25. Bernstein attributed the stronger role of rooftop and KUSUM projects partly to transmission constraints affecting utility-scale renewable projects. The Central Electricity Authority expects renewable capacity additions could moderate over the next one to two years as transmission infrastructure catches up. Meanwhile, the PM Surya Ghar scheme targets rooftop solar installations for 10 million households, with a combined capacity goal of 30 GW, further supporting decentralised solar growth.
