Portable Solar Gains US Market

Balcony and deck solar panels offer an affordable entry into renewable energy.

Small, plug-in solar systems, long-popular in Europe, are gaining momentum in the US as an accessible alternative to expensive rooftop installations. These systems, which can be placed on balconies or decks and plug directly into a wall outlet, are significantly cheaper and easier to install.

For many, the primary motivation is environmental. While a typical $2,000 system might only save a homeowner about $35 per month, it’s a low-cost way to reduce their carbon footprint. The systems’ wider adoption has been slowed by a lack of public awareness and inconsistent utility regulations. However, states like Utah are taking the lead by passing laws that streamline the process for homeowners. As federal rooftop solar tax credits face potential changes, these cheaper, do-it-yourself options are poised to become even more attractive.
