Nagpur Researchers Secure UK Patent for ‘Solar Power at Night’ Technology.

Researchers from Nagpur University (NU) and Laxminarayan Innovation Technological University (LITU) have secured a UK patent for an innovative technology that enables solar panels to generate electricity at night. Developed by Dr. Sanjay Dhoble and Prof. Vijay Pawade, the system uses bifacial solar panels equipped with LED light sources on both sides. During the day, the panels generate electricity from sunlight while surplus wind-generated energy is stored. At night or during low-light conditions, a sensor automatically activates the LEDs using the stored energy, allowing the panels to continue producing electricity. According to the researchers, the system can generate around 40% of its daytime output during nighttime without requiring an external power source. Although commercial deployment and cost analysis are still underway, the innovation has the potential to support residential buildings, industries, and street lighting while strengthening renewable energy adoption and enhancing round-the-clock clean power generation.
