Three ship recycling yards in Alang, Gujarat, are set to achieve a historic milestone after the European Commission proposed their inclusion in the European List of Ship Recycling Facilities. The facilities—Shree Ram Vessel Scrap Pvt Ltd/Shree Ram Shipping Industries Pvt Ltd and YSI Recyclers LLP—have been recognised for meeting stringent EU environmental and safety standards. If approved after the consultation period ending August 30 and formal adoption in October 2026, they will become the first South Asian, first non-OECD, and first beaching-method recycling yards to receive EU recognition. The development reflects years of investment in infrastructure, worker safety, and compliance with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships. Industry leaders believe the approval will strengthen India’s position in global ship recycling, support the country’s shipbuilding ambitions, expand responsible recycling capacity, and boost cooperation between India and the European Union.
