BRICS Climate Agenda Puts Global South at the Centre of Energy and Finance.

Energy transition, climate finance and resilience emerge as key priorities for developing economies.

BRICS is placing the priorities of the Global South at the centre of its 2026 climate agenda as India hosts the 18th BRICS Summit. The grouping is focusing on energy transition, climate finance, adaptation, critical minerals and sustainable development while recognising the different needs of developing economies. Energy cooperation remains a key priority, with discussions covering renewable energy, hydrogen, biofuels, smart grids, energy storage and affordable power. Critical minerals are also gaining importance as demand rises for electric vehicles, batteries and clean-energy technologies. BRICS is seeking reliable, diversified and fair mineral supply chains while encouraging greater value addition in resource-rich countries. Climate adaptation and resilience are another major focus, including disaster preparedness, forest-fire management and protection of vulnerable communities. However, financing remains crucial. India has stressed that developing countries need affordable climate finance and technology access to turn climate commitments into meaningful action.
