Rajasthan Plans 900 MW Pumped Storage Project in Tonk to Boost Renewable Energy Integration.

The proposed 5,400 MWh facility will store surplus solar and wind power and supply electricity during peak-demand hours.   JAIPUR: Rajasthan is advancing plans for a 900 MW pumped storage power project at Rampura in Tonk district to strengthen grid stability and meet rising peak-hour electricity demand amid expanding renewable energy capacity. The facility will provide 5,400 MWh of storage, enabling it to generate 900 MW for six hours at full capacity. It will feature three reversible pump-turbine units of 300 MW each, using surplus electricity to pump water into an upper reservoir and releasing it to generate power when demand increases. The project’s reservoirs, underground powerhouse and water-conductor system are proposed within the Bisalpur Conservation Reserve, making statutory environmental clearances essential. The state plans to select a developer through competitive bidding under a 40-year build-own-operate-transfer arrangement. Dedicated transmission infrastructure will also be required, with the proposed 400 kV Phagi grid substation located approximately 90 km away. The pre-bid meeting is scheduled for October 27, with bids due on November 30 and technical bids opening on December 1.
