China-Like Super Grid Planning Vital for India’s Renewable Energy Ambitions: MNRE Secretary.

India needs China-style super grid planning to meet its long-term renewable energy goals, said Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Addressing the Confederation of Indian Industry Annual Business Summit 2026, Sarangi said such planning is critical to achieve the NITI Aayog projection of 1,800 gigawatt renewable energy capacity by 2050. India plans to invest nearly $574 billion by 2030 to develop a super grid comprising high-voltage DC and HVAC transmission lines to evacuate power from renewable-rich regions to demand centres. Enhanced grid infrastructure and better planning, he noted, would address power curtailment challenges and unlock the full potential of renewable assets. Sarangi stressed the need for close coordination between the Centre and states to assure investors and developers. The MNRE is also proposing a larger outlay for the green energy corridor scheme, along with greater deployment of battery energy storage systems, grid-forming inverters and grid modernisation to enable smoother renewable energy integration.
