Strong gains in clean energy, sanitation, digital access, and inclusive growth signal steady SDG momentum.
India Accelerates Progress on Sustainable Development Goals.
India has made notable progress across multiple Sustainable Development Goals, advancing environmental sustainability and inclusive economic growth, according to two reports released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The country achieved 100% Open Defecation Free (ODF) districts by 2019–20, while gender-sensitive sanitation infrastructure has strengthened equity in education, with 97.2% of schools having gender-segregated toilets in 2023–24. Waste management capacity has expanded sharply, with recycling facilities increasing to 3,036 in 2024–25 from 829 in 2019–20. Over 70% of waste in smart cities is now scientifically processed, reducing landfill dependence. On clean energy, renewable sources account for 22.13% of total installed power capacity in 2024–25, up from 16.02% in 2015–16, with India emerging as a global leader in wind energy. Economic inclusion has improved, reflected in declining consumption inequality in both rural and urban areas. Digital connectivity now covers over 99% of the population, supporting inclusive and sustainable growth.
