Strategic port in Andaman & Nicobar to handle Capesize vessels and boost maritime security.
Voyants Solutions to Study Deep-Water Dry Bulk Transhipment Port at Atlanta Bay
Voyants Solutions Pvt Ltd has been awarded the mandate to conduct a techno-commercial feasibility study for a proposed deep-water dry bulk transhipment port at Atlanta Bay, located in Diglipur, North Andaman, in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, government sources said. The scope of the study also includes plans to develop a shipbuilding and ship repair hub at the bay. The consultant is expected to submit its report within six months. The proposed port is designed to handle Capesize vessels of up to 2,00,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) from a 4,000-metre-long quay. Similar to the international transhipment port planned at Galathea Bay, the Atlanta Bay project is being viewed primarily from a strategic rather than a purely commercial perspective. The government may ask state-owned major ports to fund the project using their cash reserves. Officials believe the port will enhance trade, connectivity, tourism, and maritime security in the region. Recently, the National Green Tribunal upheld environmental clearance for the mega infrastructure project at Great Nicobar Island, reinforcing the Centre’s broader maritime development push.
