Strategic maritime project aims to boost connectivity, trade, tourism and regional economic growth.
India, Indonesia Partner for Integrated Development of Sabang Port.
India and Indonesia have announced a strategic partnership for the integrated development of Sabang Port, marking a major step in strengthening maritime connectivity and regional cooperation. Following bilateral talks between Narendra Modi and Prabowo Subianto, both countries agreed to collaborate on developing cruise and marine tourism facilities, shipbuilding and ship-repair industries, and shore-based services supporting offshore energy activities in the Andaman Sea. The project is expected to improve institutional, physical and digital connectivity between India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Indonesia’s Sumatra, promoting trade, employment and regional prosperity. The two nations also reaffirmed cooperation in digital commerce, telecommunications, science, space exploration and peaceful nuclear energy. Officials have been tasked with finalising the project’s scope, financing and implementation timeline, while enhanced air and maritime connectivity will be pursued through the upcoming Andaman–Aceh Joint Task Force meeting.
