Solar shines as India powers through record demand.

Solar Power Anchors India’s Ability to Meet Record 256 GW Peak Demand.

India successfully met its highest-ever peak power demand of 256 GW, underscoring the growing role of solar energy in the country’s electricity mix. Data from the Grid Controller of India showed that at the peak demand of 256.1 GW at 3.38 pm, solar power contributed nearly 57 GW, or about 22 per cent of total generation. Earlier in the day, around 12.30 pm, solar generation—including rooftop systems—rose to about 81 GW, accounting for nearly one-third of overall electricity generation. The record demand, driven by extreme summer temperatures, surpassed the previous day’s peak of 252.1 GW. While coal-based plants continued to provide baseload power, the share of non-fossil sources such as solar, wind, hydro and nuclear has risen steadily. Narendra Modi, speaking on Mann Ki Baat, highlighted renewables as central to India’s energy security. Santosh Sarangi noted that expanding battery storage will further strengthen solar’s role in meeting future evening peaks.
