Solar and wind surge powers Gujarat to No. 1 spot; focus shifts to energy storage.
Gujarat Tops India in Renewable Energy Capacity, Edges Past Rajasthan.
Gujarat has emerged as India’s leading state in renewable energy capacity, overtaking Rajasthan with a total installed capacity of 47,178 MW, according to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The state added nearly 13,785 MW of renewable capacity over the past year, pushing it marginally ahead of Rajasthan, which stands at 47,020 MW. Gujarat’s renewable mix is led by solar power at 29,303 MW and wind power at 15,642 MW, along with hydro and bio-power capacities. Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd managing director Shalini Agarwal called the ranking a major milestone, noting that Gujarat has already achieved 47 GW against its 100 GW target for 2030. She highlighted renewables’ role in cushioning global energy shocks and said the state is now prioritising battery energy storage systems. Gujarat also retained the top position in rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. Industry body Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry said sustained investment and a strong ecosystem have driven the state’s rise, reinforcing Gujarat’s key role in India’s clean energy transition.
