Rooftop solar brings reliable electricity, boosting education and livelihoods in remote hamlets.

Odisha’s First Fully Solar-Powered Tribal Villages Light Up in Cuttack District.

Two remote tribal villages—Olaba and Kandakela Devabhumi—in Odisha’s Cuttack district have become the state’s first fully solar-powered tribal settlements, marking a major step toward energy self-sufficiency and sustainable development. Around 80 households in the Narsinghpur block were electrified through rooftop solar panel installations, providing uninterrupted renewable power. The project, implemented by TP Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL), was completed within 25 days. Reliable electricity is expected to improve household lighting, education, healthcare access and livelihood opportunities, while reducing power expenses for families. Cuttack Collector Dattatreya Bhausaheb Shinde said the initiative promotes social equity and can serve as a model for other remote regions. Each installation received a ₹30,000 subsidy from the central government and ₹25,000 from the state government, while the remaining cost was covered by the district administration through the District Mineral Foundation, with total spending of about ₹10 lakh. The project primarily benefits Below Poverty Line families and aims to encourage wider adoption of renewable energy in tribal and remote areas.
