Rooftop and ground-mounted projects cut power bills and boost green energy use.
Solar Power Helps Trichy Corporation Save ₹7.3 Crore in Five Years.
The Tiruchirappalli City Corporation has saved ₹7.3 crore in electricity bills over the last five years through its solar power initiatives, according to official audits. Between April 2021 and October 2025, the corporation’s rooftop and ground-mounted solar plants generated about 1.5 crore units of electricity. A total of 206 civic buildings—including schools, zonal offices, public toilets, and health centres—across all five zones are equipped with rooftop solar systems, with a combined capacity of 831 kW. These rooftop installations alone produced 28.9 lakh units, saving around ₹1.6 crore. In addition, the 9.6 MW ground-mounted solar plant at Panjapur generated nearly 1.2 crore units, translating into savings of ₹5.7 crore. The corporation plans further expansion near the Panjapur STP site, with power potentially linked to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation grid or used for public infrastructure. Proposals, including a new 100 kW rooftop plant, await approval from the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration.
