Rising renewable output meets record demand, but grid curtailment remains a challenge.

India’s Solar Power Generation Jumps 24% YoY in Q4 FY26: CREA Report.

India’s solar power generation rose 24% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of FY26, driving growth in overall electricity output even as grid integration challenges persisted, according to a report by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). Total electricity generation stood at 464 billion units in Q4 FY26, up 3% YoY, led by non-fossil fuel sources. Solar output increased to 48.9 BU, while wind generation grew 11%, nuclear 10%, and large hydro 7%. The surge coincided with India recording a peak electricity demand of 256 GW on April 26, 2026 — the highest ever. However, the report flagged rising renewable curtailment, with around 27 GW of solar and 4 GW of wind energy curtailed during the quarter, particularly in Gujarat. Coal plant utilisation declined, while renewables dominated new capacity additions. CREA’s India Analyst Manoj Kumar stressed the need for stronger transmission, flexible grids, and faster battery deployment to maximise clean energy use.
