India Panel Urges Faster Nuclear Approvals and Fuel Security to Reach 100 GW Target

A government-appointed panel under the Ministry of Power has called on India to speed up nuclear power development to achieve its 100 GW goal by 2047, up from the current 8.88 GW. The report, reviewed by Reuters, recommends reducing project timelines—currently 11–12 years from site approval to commissioning—by enabling faster land acquisition and clearances. It also suggests utilising retired thermal plant sites for new reactors to save time. To secure long-term fuel supply, the panel advocates expanding domestic uranium mining, securing overseas mines, and stockpiling fuel for up to 60 years of reactor operation. Furthermore, the committee promotes private sector involvement in fuel sourcing and fabrication, reprocessing of spent fuel, and revising the nuclear insurance pool to offer ₹15 billion coverage per incident.
