Govt Proposes Mandatory Energy Ratings for Large Commercial Buildings.

The Central Government has proposed mandatory energy performance ratings for all new commercial and institutional buildings with a built-up area of 20,000 square metres or more. Under the draft amendment to the Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code, projects whose construction starts after the notification will be required to obtain an energy rating from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) or a registered rating agency. The initiative aims to establish a nationally recognised system for measuring and disclosing building energy performance, making it easier for buyers, tenants, and investors to compare energy-efficient properties. By standardising assessments, the policy is expected to encourage developers to adopt energy-saving designs, advanced technologies, and sustainable construction practices. With rapid urbanisation and increasing electricity demand making buildings one of India's fastest-growing energy-consuming sectors, the proposed framework is expected to reduce energy consumption, lower operating costs, and support India's long-term climate and energy efficiency goals.
