Landmark deal signals rising confidence in India’s shipping, energy logistics, and IFSC framework.
Lila Global Acquires India-Flagged VLCC via GIFT City, Boosting Maritime Financing.
Lila Global has acquired Lila Jamnagar, a 298,997 DWT Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), marking the first Indian-flagged VLCC to be structured and registered through GIFT City IFSC. The vessel is registered under RFK Shipping IFSC Private Ltd and will be operated on the Lila Global platform, reflecting growing overseas capital participation in India’s maritime sector. Backed by Indian overseas investors, the VLCC has completed dry docking and begun its maiden voyage under the Indian flag from the Far East to western markets. Lila Global is the shipowning arm of GMS Inc., led by founder and CEO Anil Sharma. The acquisition aligns with India’s push to expand its national fleet, attract foreign capital, and strengthen energy transportation security, especially amid volatility in VLCC freight rates and geopolitical risks around the Strait of Hormuz.
