Key upgrade to ease Delhi’s landfill burden and strengthen waste management capacity.

Tehkhand Waste-to-Energy Plant Expansion Nears Green Nod, Set to Boost Power & Biogas Output.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is close to securing environmental clearance to expand the Tehkhand waste-to-energy (WTE) plant’s capacity from 2,000 MT per day to 3,000 MT by January-end. A subcommittee from the Union environment ministry recently inspected the plant, and its report will be reviewed by the expert appraisal committee in December. The expansion will significantly enhance power generation—from 25 MW to 45 MW daily—and introduce biogas production capacity of up to 20,000 cubic metres per day, which can be converted into around eight tonnes of bio-CNG. This upgrade is critical as Delhi generates nearly 11,300 MT of waste daily, with current WTE plants at Okhla, Ghazipur, and Narela-Bawana unable to fully manage the load. Parallelly, MCD is finalising supplementary agreements for the Okhla WTE plants to avoid procedural delays. The expanded Okhla capacity must be achieved by March 2027, while Tehkhand’s upgrades are targeted for completion by December 2027.
