Government explores electric cooking shift to cut LPG dependence

Solar Scheme May Spur Induction Cooktop Push Amid Energy Disruptions.

India is considering extending support for induction cooktops under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, as global energy disruptions triggered by the Iran conflict raise concerns over fuel security. Senior-level discussions are underway, with the renewable energy ministry working to finalise details aimed at promoting not just ownership but actual usage of electric cooking appliances. The move targets India’s vast base of over 320 million active LPG connections, including nearly 100 million beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. Officials believe electric cooking powered by rooftop solar can help reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels while improving household energy resilience. The government is exploring a two-pronged strategy—boosting domestic manufacturing and accelerating adoption through fiscal support. Measures under consideration include tax cuts on induction cooktops, lower customs duties on key components, and a proposal by the commerce ministry to reduce GST on appliances to 5% from 18%. Stakeholder consultations are ongoing to address supply and pricing challenges.
