Clean energy growth accelerates as solar and wind drive India’s green transition.

India Adds Record 48 GW Renewable Capacity in 2025, Solar Leads the Surge.

India’s renewable energy sector recorded a historic expansion in calendar year 2025, adding about 48 GW of new capacity, including large hydro projects, highlighting the rapid pace of the country’s clean energy transition. Excluding large hydro, renewable capacity additions stood at around 45 GW, a sharp rise compared to 28 GW added in 2024. Solar power remained the dominant contributor, accounting for a massive 38 GW of new capacity during the year, reinforcing its role as the backbone of India’s renewable growth. The wind sector also saw a strong revival, with approximately 6.3 GW added—its highest-ever annual addition—signalling renewed momentum after years of slower expansion.  On the state-wise front, Gujarat emerged as the leader in cumulative installed renewable capacity, narrowly overtaking Rajasthan. Gujarat recorded 42,583 MW, followed closely by Rajasthan at 42,531 MW. Maharashtra ranked third with 30,313 MW, while Tamil Nadu stood fourth with 27,113 MW. As of December 31, 2025, India’s total renewable capacity reached 207 GW, rising to about 258 GW when large hydro is included, strengthening the country’s path toward its long-term clean energy targets.
