China Sanctions Five U.S. Shipbuilding Units Amid Escalating Maritime Trade War.

China has imposed sanctions on five U.S. subsidiaries of South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean, escalating tensions in the global shipbuilding sector. The move follows Washington’s Section 301 trade probe into China’s dominance in shipbuilding, which Beijing claims threatens its national security. The sanctioned entities include Hanwha Shipping, Hanwha Philly Shipyard, Hanwha Ocean USA International, Hanwha Shipping Holdings, and HS USA Holdings. Both China and the U.S. have also introduced reciprocal port fees on each other’s vessels, further intensifying the maritime standoff. The sanctions come as Hanwha Ocean, which recently bought Philly Shipyard for $100 million and pledged a $5 billion investment in U.S. shipyard expansion, faces a sharp share decline in Seoul. South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said it is assessing the situation and coordinating with stakeholders to mitigate potential damage.
