DG Shipping to Track Indian Seafarers Across West Asia Amid Rising Maritime Security Risks.
The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) will now monitor Indian seafarers in West Asia, irrespective of the flag under which their vessels operate, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced. The decision follows heightened maritime security concerns after attacks on merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. A new real-time monitoring dashboard will track vessel positions, ownership, cargo, crew strength, welfare, threat assessments, voyage details, and the availability of food, fuel, medicines, and communication facilities. Shipowners, vessel managers, and recruitment agencies have been directed to ensure that no Indian seafarer is compelled to sail without adequate safety information, protection, and support. Additionally, a dedicated liaison officer will be assigned to every affected Indian seafarer to coordinate family assistance, medical updates, travel documentation, repatriation, welfare fund support, pending wages, and contractual compensation. These measures aim to strengthen the safety and welfare of Indian seafarers operating in the Persian Gulf region.
