Maharashtra Government Acquires Iconic Air India Building for ₹1,601 Crore.

The Maharashtra government has formally acquired the iconic Air India Building in Mumbai for ₹1,601 crore, marking a major step toward strengthening the state’s administrative infrastructure. The agreement transfer between Air India Assets Holding Limited and the state Public Works Department was completed at the Mantralaya in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The 23-storey, sea-facing tower at Nariman Point, built in 1974 on reclaimed state land, is one of South Mumbai’s most recognisable landmarks. Following Air India’s privatisation under the Tata Group, the building became a non-core asset held by Air India Assets Holding Limited. The state plans to convert the 45,000+ sq m structure into a consolidated government office complex to ease space constraints and reduce rental costs. The PWD has been directed to conduct structural audits and undertake quality-focused, sustainable renovations before occupancy.
