Pioneering cleaner seas — fueling the future with zero-carbon ammonia.
Japan’s Sumitomo Secures Singapore Grant to Advance Ammonia as Green Marine Fuel.
Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo Corporation has won a Singapore government grant to advance ammonia as a sustainable marine fuel, marking a significant step toward maritime decarbonisation. The grant, awarded by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) under the Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund (MINT Fund), will support R&D focused on safe and efficient ammonia bunkering at the Port of Singapore — the world’s busiest marine hub. Sumitomo plans to conduct a full-scale demonstration of ammonia bunkering by 2027, working closely with MPA to develop safety protocols, operational standards, and emergency measures. Ammonia, while promising as a zero-carbon fuel, faces challenges related to cost and handling safety. In a related initiative, a consortium led by Keppel Ltd — including Sumitomo and Advario Asia Pacific — has advanced to the next stage of Singapore’s low-carbon ammonia project on Jurong Island. These efforts reinforce Sumitomo’s commitment to global energy transition and sustainable shipping.
