Modernising Ports, Powering Coastal Growth.
Karnataka Invites Bids to Privatise Karwar, Mangalore & Malpe Port Berths Under PPP Model.
The Karnataka government has invited bids to privatise four key cargo berths at Karwar, Old Mangalore (city side), Old Mangalore (Bengre side), and Malpe under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Approved by the Cabinet on October 30, the berths will be handed over to private operators on a Renovate, Operate, Maintain and Transfer (ROMT) basis. Contracts will be awarded to the bidder offering the highest royalty per tonne of cargo, with concession periods of 30 years for Old Mangalore and Malpe, and 15 years for Karwar. The move aims to modernise port infrastructure, improve efficiency, increase revenue for the Karnataka Maritime Board, and attract private investment. The initiative is expected to boost coastal shipping, generate jobs, and support sectors such as fisheries and tourism. Bidders have until December 23 to submit documents. Interest is expected to be strong following the Supreme Court’s 2022 approval for the resumption of iron ore exports along Karnataka’s coast.
