IIT Madras Unveils India’s First Indigenous Vessel Traffic Management System for Ports.
IIT Madras has developed and deployed India’s first indigenous Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS), marking a major step toward maritime technology self-reliance. The system was created by the National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC) based on specifications from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. NTCPWC Head K. Murali said the system boosts indigenisation, prevents reliance on foreign vendors, and eliminates risks of strategic vessel-movement data leaks. The government now retains full control over the source code, databases, and system architecture, ensuring long-term security. The VTMS is scalable, cost-effective, secure, and adaptable to future needs. It has already been implemented at Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL), Kerala, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May. Two more Western Coast ports are in talks to deploy the system. With complete technical know-how available domestically, India can now build a skilled maritime tech workforce and reduce operational and financial risks linked to imported solutions.
