Landmark green ship deal signals India’s rising stature in global shipbuilding.

SDHI Bags India’s First Ammonia Dual-Fuel Bulk Carrier Order Worth Over ₹2,600 Cr.

Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd (SDHI) has secured India’s first-ever order for ammonia dual-fuel bulk carriers, winning a contract worth $240–280 million (₹2,230–₹2,603 crore) from Energy ONE Ltd. The deal involves the construction of four eco-friendly bulk carriers of 92,500 DWT each, making them among the largest commercial vessels ever to be built in India. The ships will be constructed at SDHI’s Pipavav shipyard in Gujarat and feature ammonia-fuelled propulsion systems, aligned with the global push for low-emission shipping. Vessel design will be handled by South Korea’s KMS-EMEC and classed by Det Norske Veritas (DNV). The order highlights renewed confidence in Indian shipyards following SDHI’s revival under the Swan Group and supports the government’s ambition to position India among the world’s top shipbuilding nations, driven by policy support, green financing, and the Maritime Development Fund.
