High refusal rate raises concerns despite strong demand for affordable housing.
Nearly 30% of Konkan Mhada Lottery Winners Surrender Flats Over Cost and Location Issues.
Nearly one-third of the winners in the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority’s (Mhada) Konkan Board 2025 housing lottery have surrendered their flats, internal data reveals. Out of 4,523 allottees required to confirm their decision, 1,374 — almost 30% — opted to give up their units, primarily due to affordability concerns, unfavourable locations, or dissatisfaction with the specific flats offered. The Konkan Board had offered 5,285 flats and 77 plots across Thane, Palghar, Badlapur, and Sindhudurg in its October draw, which saw around 1.16 lakh applications. Officials noted that some winners also surrendered flats because they won multiple units across categories, but are allowed to retain only one under Mhada rules. Meanwhile, 973 winners had yet to communicate their decision, prompting the Konkan Board to extend the deadline to November 28, which ends today. The situation highlights growing challenges in balancing affordability with consumer expectations in housing schemes.
