From transport to tech — building India’s data centre future.
AECOM Bets on India as Global Hub for Data Centre Expertise.
Dallas-based infrastructure consultancy AECOM is positioning India as its global centre of technical expertise for data centre development, a sector projected to grow from $5 billion in 2024 to $12.9 billion by 2033. Traditionally focused on transport, AECOM now sees data centres, advanced manufacturing, and energy transition as key growth drivers in India. The firm currently manages 8–10 projects for hyperscalers and co-locators, providing services from site selection to design, supervision, and project management. AECOM aims to make India the Centre of Excellence for data centre design, supporting projects not only domestically but also in Europe and the US. With ambitions of 15–20% growth, AECOM highlights the rising scale of projects, from single 20 MW units to 100 MW-plus campuses. Maharashtra leads the sector, with Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu emerging as hubs. The company has urged a unified national framework to strengthen India’s global competitiveness in the data centre market.
