Falling compliance and election disruptions derail NMC’s ambitious revenue targets.
3.76 Lakh Property Owners Skip Tax, Nagpur Civic Finances Under Strain.
Property tax collections of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation have dropped sharply in 2025–26, raising concerns over compliance and fiscal stability. Despite the total number of properties rising to 8.36 lakh, the civic body has managed to collect only ₹252.66 crore so far—significantly lower than ₹306 crore collected last year, when 94% of the target was achieved. Alarmingly, just 4.60 lakh property owners have paid taxes, leaving about 3.76 lakh properties either in default or outside the tax net. Property tax, the largest revenue source for the NMC, was initially targeted at ₹350 crore for 2025–26 and later raised to ₹400 crore, widening the gap between expectations and actual collections. Officials attribute the slowdown partly to civic elections, which diverted recovery staff during peak months. Zone-wise data reveals uneven enforcement, with even top-performing areas showing nearly one-third non-compliance, deepening financial stress for the civic body in Nagpur.
