Extension of NSICT concession aims to optimise capacity, revenue, and investor value.
JNPA Plans to Bundle DP World’s Two Terminals into a Single Mega Facility by 2031.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has approved a proposal to extend the concession of the Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT), run by DP World, by four years beyond 2028. The move aligns its tenure with the adjacent Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal (NSIGT), also operated by DP World, allowing both facilities to be bundled into a 930-metre single mega terminal in 2031. Officials said operating the two separately would lead to capacity and revenue loss, as combined, they can berth three vessels simultaneously, but separately, only two. The extension plan, now awaiting ratification from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, is expected to enhance efficiency and fetch better royalty bids during privatisation. To safeguard throughput, NSICT will be required to maintain 90% of its capacity during the extended period. The Public Accounts Committee had earlier criticised JNPA for tendering the terminals separately instead of combining them.
