Shipping Ministry Plans Dedicated Satellite for Safer & Smarter Maritime Operations.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is planning to launch a dedicated satellite or acquire a transponder to strengthen India’s maritime governance and port operations. Announced by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on National Space Day, the initiative aims to provide exclusive coverage of Indian coastal waters, inland waterways, and ports. The system will enable real-time vessel tracking, early congestion detection, navigational safety, and enhanced port management. Beyond operations, the satellite would improve search-and-rescue missions, disaster response, and pollution control, while reducing dependence on foreign navigation networks. This move aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, ensuring India’s maritime sector is more self-reliant and technologically advanced. Sonowal also highlighted India’s recent achievements in the space sector, including the Aditya-L1 solar observatory, astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s mission to the ISS, the upcoming Gaganyaan mission, and plans for a national space station, underscoring India’s growing leadership in space and maritime synergy.
