DCI to Invest ₹2,000 Crore in Two New Dredgers, Plans ₹500 Crore Rights Issue to Boost Self-Reliance

The Dredging Corporation of India Ltd (DCI) has announced a ₹2,000 crore investment to procure two advanced 12,000-cubic-metre trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs) from Cochin Shipyard Ltd, alongside plans for a ₹500 crore rights issue to enhance financial strength and operational expansion. Chairman M. Angamuthu stated that the move will make India fully self-reliant in dredging, eliminating the need to charter foreign vessels. Currently, DCI operates 10 TSHDs with a combined capacity of 59,513 cubic metres, catering to 55% of India’s dredging demand. The launch of ‘DCI Dredger Godavari’, built with Dutch firm Royal IHC’s technology, marks a new era in indigenous shipbuilding and maritime capability under ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. These modern dredgers will boost fuel efficiency, automation, and global competitiveness, strengthening India’s position as a leader in sustainable and self-reliant maritime infrastructure.
