Anchoring India’s Maritime Future.
PM Modi to Launch India’s Global Shipbuilding Push from Bhavnagar on Sept 20.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch India’s ambitious drive to become a global shipbuilding power on September 20 in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, home to Alang’s renowned shipbreaking yards. The initiative, part of India’s Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, seeks to position the country among the top five shipbuilding nations by 2047, backed by a comprehensive ₹25,000 crore Maritime Development Fund (MDF), revamped Ship Building Financial Assistance (SBFA) scheme, and infrastructure status for large vessels. A key highlight is the proposed ship recycling credit note scheme, offering fleet owners up to 40% rebate on new vessels built in Indian yards, expected to boost green ship recycling and generate massive employment. Plans also include shipbuilding clusters across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. With global players like South Korea’s KSOE and Maersk showing interest, the policy package promises to expand India’s maritime ecosystem, create 4 crore jobs, and strengthen the nation’s role in the global maritime economy.
