₹51,383 crore investment to add 2.85 million GT, boosting maritime resilience.
India Accelerates Atmanirbhar Shipping Plan with 62 New Vessels in FY27.
India has unveiled an ambitious plan to add 62 vessels in FY 2026–27 with an investment of ₹51,383 crore, reinforcing shipping as a key pillar of national economic resilience. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the expansion would create an additional 2.85 million gross tonnage capacity, strengthening India’s ability to manage global trade and supply chain disruptions. The roadmap was outlined during a high-level inter-ministerial review meeting chaired by Sonowal to assess the evolving situation in the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on India’s energy and trade security. Emphasising Atmanirbhar Bharat, the minister called for rapid capacity expansion across strategic maritime segments. The proposed fleet addition includes container vessels, LPG and crude oil carriers, tankers, dredging vessels, and green tugs to support sustainable port operations. Officials said the initiative aims to reduce reliance on foreign vessels, enhance strategic autonomy, and build a future-ready maritime ecosystem capable of supporting India’s growing trade volumes and long-term economic growth.
