India Targets Record 20 GW Distributed Renewable Energy Capacity This Fiscal.

India is on track to achieve a record 20 GW of distributed renewable energy capacity during the current financial year, driven primarily by the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and PM-KUSUM schemes. According to Renewable Energy Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi, the target surpasses last year’s addition of 16 GW. The government has already crossed five million beneficiary households under the PM Surya Ghar scheme and aims to install rooftop solar systems in 10 million homes, creating 30 GW of capacity by the end of the fiscal year. Future renewable energy growth is also expected to be supported by rising demand from data centres, green hydrogen projects, and solar pump installations. The Central Electricity Authority estimates data centres alone could add over 26 GW of clean power demand by 2032. Additionally, the government’s new floating solar initiative, backed by ₹5,070 crore, will include energy storage to ensure reliable round-the-clock renewable power supply.
