India’s Green Logistics: Metro Gains, National Gaps Remain

On World Logistics Day, India's green logistics journey shows mixed progress—while metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru lead in sustainable practices, expansion beyond urban areas remains slow.

Last-mile deliveries contribute up to 40% of city transport emissions, prompting a shift to electric and CNG vehicles in city centers. Successful models include Delhi’s two-tier system—diesel trucks for long hauls and green vehicles for inner-city delivery. Companies like Jeena & Co. have converted 25% of their fleet to EVs in major cities. However, challenges persist in scaling up due to high upfront costs, limited highway infrastructure for charging and LNG refueling, and policy gaps. Only one-third of India’s heavy truck fleet may switch to LNG in the next 5–7 years. Though investor interest surged by 300% in Q2 2025, broader adoption demands stronger policy support, green financing, and ecosystem-wide collaboration to make sustainable logistics viable across India’s full transport landscape.
