Around 1,500 Ships Stranded in Gulf Amid Iran–Hormuz Crisis: IMO.

Around 1,500 ships carrying nearly 20,000 crew members are stranded in the Gulf following Iran’s blockade of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, according to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Speaking at the Maritime Convention of the Americas, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said sailors are innocent victims of a geopolitical conflict beyond their control. The crisis follows the Middle East war launched on February 28 by Israel and the United States against Iran, triggering reprisals and a shipping blockade. More than 30 vessel attacks have occurred, leaving 10 sailors dead. Before the conflict, nearly 20% of global oil and gas passed through Hormuz. Its closure has driven up energy prices worldwide. IMO has urged avoiding Gulf transits to prevent further loss of life and economic damage. Donald Trump briefly announced a naval escort plan but later paused it, with Washington now awaiting Iran’s response to ceasefire proposals.
