Earthy Farmhouse Design Weaved Around A Traditional Courtyard

Set on a 19-acre farmland, this 2600 sq.ft earthy farmhouse is designed around an existing tree and a visually connected central courtyard, ensuring the home’s linearity while embracing nature. Using compressed stabilized earth blocks from on-site clay, reclaimed wood, lime-washed walls, and tandoor flooring with black oxide skirting, the design emphasizes low embodied energy and material honesty.

The design ideology was to let the house merge with its natural surroundings, reflecting the client’s love for organic farming and antiques while allowing the home to evolve organically over time. Multi-functional, non-rigid furniture layouts, including an L-shaped bench in the living area, bring warmth and flexibility, allowing the spaces to accommodate larger gatherings and intimate corners seamlessly.

The landscaped courtyard treads through the home, creating varying levels that enhance visual experience while maintaining a human-scale relatability. Exposed brick walls, form-finished slabs, toggle switches, and exposed conduits add to the informal, earthy feel, making the farmhouse sustainable, cost-effective, and timeless while serving as a subtle foreground to nature’s vibrant backdrop.
