Upgrade to boost shipbuilder’s financial autonomy and expansion plans.
GRSE Set for Navratna Status as DPE Clears Proposal, Final Approval Pending.
The Department of Public Enterprises (Department of Public Enterprises) has cleared a proposal to grant Navratna status to Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), paving the way for enhanced financial and operational autonomy for the state-run defence shipbuilder. The proposal, moved last month by the Department of Defence Production under the Ministry of Defence, was examined by an inter-ministerial committee and has now been approved by the DPE. It will next be placed before an apex committee for final clearance. Navratna status allows select central public sector enterprises to make larger investments without prior government approval, enabling faster decision-making, joint ventures, and expansion. Kolkata-based GRSE primarily builds warships for the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard. The company reported a 39% rise in total income to ₹15,411 crore in FY25 and a 46% year-on-year jump to ₹1,958 crore in the December quarter. Currently, India has 27 Navratna CPSEs.
