Tripura Goes All-In on Solar
State government to use the rooftops of all its buildings to generate power.
In a significant push for renewable energy, Tripura's government plans to use the rooftops of all its 2,000 government buildings to generate solar power. The initiative, led by the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA), aims to produce 70 MW from solar panels, addressing a power deficit caused by dwindling natural gas supplies.
Four of the state's five gas-based power plants are currently operating at reduced capacity due to a gas shortage. The move to solar is a strategic shift as Tripura's energy demand is projected to double by 2030. TREDA has set an initial target of 10.50 MW, with tendering for the project in the final stages. This transition will also create jobs, with a focus on training local youth as solar technicians to support the new infrastructure.
