Saudi Arabia’s Alfanar Group is eyeing India’s green hydrogen sector but is awaiting clearer policy and regulatory signals before making its entry.

According to Mohammed Irfan, CEO of Alfanar Global Development - India, the company is ready to leverage its international experience, particularly from Egypt and Chile, to replicate successful models. However, India currently lacks assured offtake agreements for green hydrogen, unlike its renewable sector, which benefits from long-term PPAs with entities like NTPC and SECI. Alfanar has 506.5 MW of operational wind capacity in Gujarat, with another 50 MW under construction, and a global renewable portfolio of 1.7 GW across Spain, India, and Egypt. It is also developing a sustainable aviation fuel project in the UK. Irfan highlighted grid connectivity challenges, noting that CTU/PGCIL substations are already oversubscribed, pushing earliest new connections to 2031 due to prior bookings by IPPs and land brokers holding future access rights.
